Patient pointing out a cold sore near his lip

You were simply going about your morning routine when you happened to notice something while looking in your mirror. There’s a red bump on your mouth! Should you be alarmed? Or will it go away on its own? Also – what exactly is it?

What you’re looking at is most likely either a canker sore or cold sore. They can be bothersome, but aren’t usually serious, and can typically be treated at home. Keep reading to learn what the difference is between these two oral sores and what you should do next!

The Difference Between a Canker Sore and a Cold Sore

Canker sores and cold sores are very similar. They both develop around your mouth, and often look and feel the same. However, canker sores usually form inside your mouth, while cold sores usually form near your lips.

Researchers are totally sure what causes canker sores, but they believe that it has something to do with nutrient deficiencies, stress, oral injury, or hormone fluctuations. They do know what causes cold sores: HSV, also known as herpes. Before you panic, know that HSV is actually extremely common! It’s also very contagious, and can be spread by kissing or sharing utensils.

Signs You Might Need Medical Help

These two types of oral sores do usually go away on their own, and can be treated with OTC pain relievers or topical gels. That said, you should seek treatment and visit your doctor if:

  • Your sore is large
  • It hasn’t healed after two weeks
  • You have reoccurring sores that appear several times in one year
  • It’s difficult to eat or drink
  • You develop a fever or flu-like symptoms

Tips for Preventing Oral Sores

If you’d rather not develop a canker or cold sore in the first place, there are a few things you can do to help lower your risk! Here are a few tips:

  • Brush your teeth twice daily and floss once per day to reduce bacteria content in and near your mouth
  • Make sure you’re eating a balanced diet and are drinking plenty of water
  • Wash your face with facial soap and a clean towel regularly
  • Avoid sharing utensils, straws, glasses, and other such items
  • Take steps to reduce your stress when you start to feel overwhelmed
  • Use orthodontic wax as needed if you wear braces

Remember that canker sores and cold sores are fairly common. Multiple factors can cause them to form, and you might not have necessarily “done anything wrong” to trigger them. Your orthodontist can help you treat and manage them, so don’t hesitate to give them a call if you’d like assistance!
