If you just finished with your braces or clear aligner treatment, you might be excited about your new smile. While you may be antsy about showing off your results, your orthodontic journey isn’t quite over. You will need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in place, so it’s important you take great care of it. Here are four tips to help you keep this oral appliance in good condition.
Tip #1: Take Out Your Retainer Before You Eat
Before you dig into your meals, you will need to take out your retainer. Eating or drinking anything with it can trap bacteria and food between them and your teeth. You risk developing a cavity or even stains! It’s also possible you’ll damage your oral appliance, meaning you’ll need a new one sooner than expected. The only thing you can have while wearing it is water.
Tip #2: Only Store It in Its Case
Building off the point above, be sure that you always put your retainer in its designated case. Try not to wrap it in a napkin or set it on a counter, as it can be mistaken for trash and thrown in the garbage. It might be helpful to have a spare container in your bag or car; that way, you are never far from one!
Tip #3: Clean Your Retainer the Right, Safe Way
You will need to clean your retainer to get rid of any plaque that’s transferred to it. It’s best to do this twice daily and simply use a soft-bristle toothbrush and clear, gentle soap. Anything too harsh can damage the plastic and your mouth!
Not only that, but make sure the water isn’t too hot. The material is thin after all, so you don’t want to warp it. If you are going to do a deeper cleaning, then consider using a denture-cleaning tablet or a small amount of baking soda; that way, it stays fresh.
Tip #4: Replace It If You See Any Damage
Accidents happen all the time, and your retainers might find themselves in one! If you end up damaging or breaking it, then it’s important you schedule a visit with your orthodontist right away. They will be able to get you a new one; that way, your teeth stay put and don’t drift back to their original positions.
In the end, this oral appliance won’t last forever. If you notice that it’s too tight or doesn’t look in too good of shape, then call your provider. They will be able to get you sorted and help you enjoy your straighter smile for a lifetime.
