Orthodontic Braces – Richardson

Show Off a Straighter Smile

Not everyone is lucky enough to develop a perfectly aligned smile. Misalignment issues can lead to a variety of negative consequences, like low self-esteem, difficulty cleaning, and a higher risk of oral health issues, like tooth decay and gum disease. The good news is that we offer orthodontic braces to shift the teeth into perfect alignment. To learn more about braces or to schedule a consultation, give us a call.

What Are Orthodontic Braces?

Orthodontic braces are made of small brackets and wires that are bonded to the front surface of the teeth. Then, a wire is used to connect the brackets. The wires are adjusted in tightness and orientation to move the teeth gradually and gently to their desired positions. Braces are securely fastened to the teeth, but you still need to be careful to keep them in good condition. Orthodontic braces are popular because they can correct a wide range of misalignment issues, like bite misalignment, crowded/crooked teeth, and gapped teeth.

The Types of Braces

We offer three different types of orthodontic braces. Here’s what each of them looks like.

Traditional Braces

When you think of “braces,” are likely picturing traditional braces. Traditional braces use metal brackets are wires. This is the most common type of braces. We will start by bonding a bracket on each tooth, then place a thin, flexible archwire over the brackets. Tiny elastic bands will keep the wire in place. You can choose clear or tooth-colored bands for a more subtle appearance or brightly colored ones for a more festive look.

Clear/Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces, or clear braces, work the exact same way as metal braces. The main difference is that all of the brackets, wires, and bands are tooth colored. This helps them to blend into your smile more. They are still visible, but don’t stand out as much. Ceramic braces tend to be more fragile than metal braces, so you need to be extra careful.

Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces have a very similar appearance to metal braces on the outside. The main difference is that they have a built-in clip system to hold the wire in place, so no elastic bands are needed.

Caring for Your Braces

When you or your child gets braces, it is necessary to implement steps throughout the day to keep them in good condition. This includes:

  • Brushing twice, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash daily
  • Using a threaded flosser or water flosser to clean underneath the wires
  • Avoiding foods that are very hard or sticky
  • Refraining from chewing on hard objects or using the teeth as tools
  • See us every six to eight weeks for adjustments
